The Limerick Story
In the '90s, Joan Ortiz proudly drove around with a bumper sticker on her car that read "Ask me about breastfeeding." Joan's daughter, Kristina, was mortified by the bumper sticker. But little did young Kristina know that her birth was the inspiration behind the Limerick story.
When Kristina was born in 1989, Joan, a registered nurse, and her mother Patricia, a registered dietician, visited a lactation consultant for the first time. Suddenly Patricia had an epiphany: they should go into business together, and Limerick was born, named after Patricia’s mother’s birthplace. They knew from personal experience that working breastfeeding moms needed support, so they started by providing Limerick’s workplace lactation programs. Then, after ten years of providing workplace lactation programs for companies, they saw another need. New moms were looking for something that better mimicked a baby’s nursing pattern. With the help of an engineer—and input from the moms participating in their workplace lactation program—Patricia and Joan designed a pump that did just that. They called it PJ’s Comfort (Pat and Joan), and new moms loved it. From 2010 to 2024, Kristina—now a mom and no longer embarrassed by the bumper sticker—worked alongside Joan and Pat as the company's Operations Manager, bringing together three generations of women who understand the importance of family support, lactation services, and a good breast pump.
In 2018, the working mothers behind Limerick realized that today’s parents need more resources and services, leading to their first partnership with Carla Greenan, a professional certified coach who specializes in helping new parents create their new normal as working parent. Since then, Limerick has expanded its services to include more trained professionals passionate about helping expecting parents navigate pregnancy, birth, mental health, return to work, and their newborn's first year of development. Today, the Limerick team is still a growing family, with Pat and Joan continuing to evolve their business and adapt to the ever-changing needs of working moms and new parents.
